Phonics can help your child read
I recommend using Phonics workbooks and Flashcards. These easy to use tools are geared for all ages and you can find everything you need Free to use from the internet.
What is Phonics? Phonics is a relationship between letters and sounds in a language ... Phonics shows beginners to read and pronounce words by learning to associate letters or letter groups with the sounds they make.
Learning phonics will help your children learn to read and spell.
My daughter is now 17 and loves to read Horse novels. It wasn't always like this though, her ability to learn to read and spell were very weak to say the least. I still remember her grade 1 report card. She had a "D" in reading, I was shocked! That was the day I began helping my daughter at home with phonics. I decided to introduce Phonics at home to her because the school curriculum at that time didn't use phonics in the classroom. Teaching was not my forte...but with some effort on my part, the learning had begun. My niece who is in grade 6 is experiencing major problems with her reading and writing so I plan on helping her through Phonics tools. There are so many ways to help someone read that in my eyes illiteracy shouldn't even exist.....Personally it feels great helping and giving back to people who are in need.
The ABC's of Reading
ABC's are the building blocks of reading. These basics fundamentals should be introduced as soon as your child starts communicating.
What you will need to successfully teach Phonics at home
Patience - Hopefully you are the type of person who has lots of it. Teaching phonics can be very challenging at times. Just remember the goal, stay calm and stay focused.
Time Management - Make a schedule of when you can teach phonics. Be disciplined and stick to it. Consider your workload and your child's to determine the best times. Post this schedule where it is visible, perhaps a message board or the fridge.
Phonics Workbooks and Flashcards - These are easily obtained from the internet. I have included some online resources that I personally use and love in the Resources section below. If you don't have access to a computer or the internet, you can try your local library they usually have free services available for the public. You can also purchase the workbooks and flashcards from a store if you prefer. The last thing you could consider doing is making flashcards and worksheets by hand yourself, you would only need a paper and pencil.
A Work Area - Dedicate a certain area of the house where you will teach Phonics to your child. Ensure that there is a desk or table to work at and that you have adequate lighting. It's good if you pick a place with very little noise or distractions. This will keep things on track.
Rewards - Every child needs to know that they have done a great job! I found that simple rewards like stickers that said "Great Reading" and "Way to Go" were an inexpensive way to tell my child I was proud of their achievements. Another simple reward is a printed certificate with their name on it. You can buy these or also download free ones from the internet. In the Resource section below, I have included a few sites where you can get some.
